創世記 ３２編２３節～３３節
これまでのヤコブがしていることは独り相撲でした。試練の中で、恐れと不安と迷いに支配されていました。そのとき何者かが現れました。実はその人は神のみ使いでありました。「何をくよくよと迷い、悩んでいるのか。私との信頼関係はどうしたのか」。神はヤコブに問いかけました。「行くべきか、行かざるべきか」、「兄エサウと共に生きるのか、生きないのか」。ここが人生の分岐点です。これまでのヤコブの人生は逃げっ放しの人生でした。恐れと不安と迷いの人生でした。しかしついにヤコブは決心します。「故郷に帰ってヤコブ兄さんに心から謝ろう。そして本当に神様から祝福された人間になろう」。ヤコブのこの決意を象徴する出来事、それが「ペヌエルでの格闘」です。神のみ使いと相撲をとった不思議な物語です。激しい格闘のあと、ヤコブは祝福を受けて神からイスラエルという名を与えられました。単なる名前の変更ではありません。ヤコブが試練の中で成長し、これまでの生き方ではなく、神から祝福される新しい生き方へと、他者と共に生きる新しい生き方へと、根本的に変えられたということなのです。ヤコブは...
